The times when the Sun is at its furthest from the celestial equator are called the solstices. This will occur on June 20 this year at 6:59 pm CDT. There will be more minutes of sunlight in the northern hemisphere on this day than there are at any other time of the year. During the northern solstice the Sun appears to be directly overhead at noon for places situated at latitude 23.44° north, known as the Tropic of Cancer. Here in Real, we are just 25 km or about 16 miles north of the Tropic of Cancer. Solstice comes from the Latin (sol, sun; sistit, stands). For several days before and after each solstice, the sun appears to stand still in the sky—that is, its noontime elevation does not seem to change.
